El actor tiene una fundación, Ian Somerhalder Fundation, en la que todo el mundo puede participar y aportar su granito de arena. ¿Qué se pretende conseguir? Ayudar tanto a los animales que más lo necesitan como a la conservación del medio ambiente.

No es un secreto que el actor lucha febrilmente a favor de todos los seres vivos, pues en su cuenta de instagram publica numerosas fotos para animar a sus fans a que se unan a la causa. Estos son algunos ejemplos donde habla de rinocerontes, pelícanos y del calentamiento global:
